De spanning stijgt....

Nog 17 nachtjes voor ik vertrek. Ik was natuurlijk al aan het aftellen vanaf het moment dat het nog 100 nachtjes was, maar dat is inmiddels alweer een tijdje geleden en nu komt alles toch wel heel dichtbij! Met nog veel dingen die ik moet regelen en doen, mensen die ik nog wil zien en mijn afscheidingsfeestje voor de boeg vliegt de tijd. Over 3 weken om deze tijd ben ik aan het werk, in Kaapstad!
Dus het werd tijd dat ik me eens wat meer ging verdiepen in mijn reis. Want op zich is het best handig om te weten wat je nu precies gaat doen en bij welk gastgezin je terecht komt toch?! Terwijl ik in de veronderstelling was dat die informatie nog niet beschikbaar was, kwam ik er vandaag toevallig achter dat dit al een aantal weken op mijn persoonlijke pagina van Projects Abroad staat. En nu beginnen de zenuwen en de zin echt te komen, want dit is wat ik ga doen:
De eerste periode van mijn verblijf in Kaapstad werk ik aan één van de Care Projects, dit is de omschrijving.
The children who will come to the Masikhule Educare come from families that are very underprivileged and whose parents have to work long and hard hours at quite low paying jobs in order to survive. They are quite grateful to be able to leave their children in the good hands of those who are working at the Masikhule Educare, who they can trust with their little ones. Parents are highly anticipating the volunteers who will be assisting at the Educare Center and are very appreciative of the time you are putting into their kids and community.
A typical day at Masikhule Educare will vary on a day to day basis. Being open and flexible to any challenge that comes along is key in your role! Your main role is to connect with these amazing children, talk to them, practice their English, read stories, sing songs, play games. Get as creative as you can, the energy you put into everyday is the energy you will get back! You will assist in feeding them, cleaning them, dressing them, and much more. You will get to know these kids so well and they will cherish every moment they get to spend with you. They will learn as much from you as you will from them, try to learn some Xhosa or Afrikaans phrases, they can be really good teachers!
The creches are located in areas of Cape Town that are poverty stricken, which means the creche itself may not be in the best conditions, you will quite often be working in smaller spaces, with large amounts of children, so prepare yourself for a lack of personal space and lower hygenic standards then the Western World. These areas are burdened with unemployment, lack of education, personal goals, so there will most likely be people hanging around with nothing to do, shacks put together with corrugated iron, cardboard, raw materials and there will most likely be a significant amount of garbage scattered everywhere. It is your unique responsibility to give these children a sense of hope and the ability to believe that they donÕt have to get caught in the downward spiral affect that poverty creates.

Het tweede deel van mijn drie maanden werk ik aan één van de Teaching Projects.
The teaching projects are for individuals that want to get a chance to have an experience teaching English or other subjects, to primary students aged 5-13. Teaching volunteers will be working in schools that are under resourced, have high numbers of students, lack of teachers, lack of specialized curriculum and have students coming from a variety of families, most would be considered on the border of lower class and poverty line. All of these factors result in students being behind in their studies, lacking in skills that should be developed at earlier ages, lack of motivation or engagement in learning and overworked teachers who may also be unmotivated and underpaid.
Your role in the classroom will be varied. You will be assigned to a teacher and classroom associated with the subject and age group that you are interested in teaching. Teachers may not tell you exactly what you are supposed to be doing, so it is important that you engage with them and see where you are able to help, how you can be of assistance to them in order to alleviate some of their stress and work. This can be a variety of different tasks, helping small groups with lessons they may be struggling with, doing random tasks like copies, planning lessons to teach to the class, grading/marking assignments, etc. It is extremely important that you have open communication with your teacher about what you would like to help with, so that you both can determine your role in the classroom and work together to better the students education and help alleviate your teacher's work load!
The schools that our volunteers work in are in a region named the Cape Flats. This area is known for poverty, lack of education, opportunity, unemployment and crime. The families who send their children to the schools we work in, may or may not be employed and quite often there may be many issues at home. Your role at the school is to be a role model for these students, showing a positive attitude, hope for their future and improving their self worth.
Deze school heeft meer dan 1000 leerlingen en in tegenstelling tot Nederland bestaan klassen hier uit 40 of meer leerlingen.
En dan waar ik ga wonen. Ik kom terecht bij een gastgezin en sinds een halfuur geleden weet ik ook bij wie. Bij de familie Valley, een ouder echtpaar die hun kleinzoon en twee van hun vier dochters ook in huis hebben. Volgens de beschrijving zijn het hartelijke mensen die verschrikkelijk goed kunnen koken, dus als ik terug kom ben ik waarschijnlijk 20 kilo zwaarder! Ik deel een kamer met 1 tot 3 andere vrijwilligers en met die anderen deel ik ook een badkamer.
Nu ik dit weet begin ik het steeds leuker, maar ook steeds spannender te vinden! De paar foto's die ik heb van de plaatsen waar ik ga werken en het huis waar ik ga wonen zal ik plaatsen en ik zou zeggen: tot over 3 weken, wanneer ik mijn volgende berichtje zal sturen vanuit Kaapstad, Grassy Park om precies te zijn!

Hallo meisje, sinds drieenhalf uur ben je in Kaapstad! Vandaag wordt een drukken dag met alle eerste indrukken. Wacht met spanning op je eerste verslag. Dikke kus :)
